The University of Sheffield was developed from 3 Local Colleges: Sheffield medical school (founded in 1828), harbour College (1879) and Sheffield Institute of Technology (1884). In 1897, the 3 colleges merged into University of Sheffield and became a royal charter in 1905 and promoted to University of Sheffield.
